A decisive victory — where it wins at least 13 of the 20 seats it is contesting — will give the party a majority in the 75-member legislative council. With this aim front and centre, the party has deployed all ministers and MLAs to campaign. Besides approaching voters (members of rural and urban local bodies), the party has also been organising rallies with leaders like chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and his predecessor BS Yediyurappa in attendance. Victory in 13 seats will not only ensure the ruling party doesn’t have to depend on the cooperation of the opposition to get important bills passed, but also give it a significant push to prepare for the 2023 assembly elections. The victory will also give Bommai much-needed relief as he seems to be on the backfoot after the bitcoin row and allegations of corruption in awarding government tenders.
