A man was arrested by police in Mysuru, India, for cheating women out of money for a fake approval certificate for the Karnataka government’s Gruha Lakshmi registration scheme. This scheme provides a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 to female heads of households. The suspect, identified as Suresh Kumar, was found to have been issuing fake documents complete with images of Karnataka’s chief minister and welfare minister. The incident follows the recent launch of the registration initiative; officials have appealed to recipients not to use private schemes offering registration for the scheme.
