A woman in Bengaluru lost Rs 5 lakh to fraudsters who posed as Bescom staff and asked her to pay a pending electricity bill. The fraudsters sent her an SMS and asked her to contact a customer care number. They then asked for her meter number and customer ID details and instructed her to make a UPI payment. When that didn't work, they asked her to download an application and click on a link, which resulted in multiple OTPs being generated and money being deducted from her account. The woman managed to disconnect the call and transferred the remaining money to another account.
