The department of state educational research and training (DSERT) in Karnataka has launched a pilot programme to train teachers in handling multilingual classrooms. The programme, conducted by the Regional Institute of English (RIE), aims to use a child's mother tongue to facilitate the learning of English. The training allows teachers to incorporate students' native languages into the classroom, promoting inclusivity and a democratic approach. The pilot programme is being conducted for classes 1-5 and has already trained 160 teachers from Karnataka Public Schools. The training is especially beneficial in Bengaluru, where there is a diverse population.
