The Siddaramaiah cabinet has approved the recommendations of the Justice K Bhaktavatsala Commission report, clearing the way for long-overdue elections for BBMP, zilla panchayat, and taluk panchayat. The report recommends providing up to 33% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in urban and rural local bodies, as well as reservations for OBCs in BBMP mayor and deputy mayor posts. The cabinet rejected the recommendations to increase the tenures of mayors and deputy mayors and reclassify OBCs into four categories. The cabinet also decided to bring all urban and local bodies election wings under the department of personnel and administrative reforms. Additionally, the cabinet decided to fix the sharing of developed land in layouts developed by the Karnataka Housing Board on a case-by-case basis.
