Karnataka has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an injunction on the Cauvery Water Management Authority's order to release water to Tamil Nadu. The state is also seeking clearance from the Centre for the Mekedatu reservoir project, which it believes will help resolve the long-standing dispute with Tamil Nadu. Karnataka is facing a severe water shortage, with most taluks declared drought-hit. The state cannot afford to release the amount of water specified by the authority and has been releasing a lower amount.
